Making My Writing Time More Efficient

So, I haven’t chatted about anything beyond new releases recently partly due to how little time I seem to have to get things done.  I’m running from life responsibilities to work responsibilities and then collapsing in bed.

But I actually have something that I would like to share because it has radically improved my efficiency when writing. It is an app called Notes Plus. Just to get it out of the way, no-I am not being paid in any way, shape, or form by them to promote their product. I just really, really like it.

ipadprowithnotesplusscreenshotandpencil900So here’s how it started: I was trying to figure out how to become more productive in my writing. I examined my process to see what was sucking up my time. And I realized it was re-typing my notes. I tend to write a first draft right on my laptop, then I print it up and handwrite all my edits. I find I think better that way which means those edits tend to be extensive – pages and pages. But then I need to re-type them.

It takes forever.

So I went searching. And I found Notes Plus. It requires an Ipad Pro and an Apple pencil, but I can ‘write’ directly on the iPad and then it converts my handwriting into text! It is incredible. I cannot praise the time savings this app has provided enough. So if you are looking for a cool app that will reduce your typing time, check it out. Honestly, it is just amazing! Happy writing!

Helen of Troy – More than Just a Pretty Face

The name Helen of Troy is known throughout the world, in large part due to Homer and The Iliad. But the legend of Helen was known for hundreds of years before Homer ever told her tale. In fact, The Iliad, written at least five hundred years after the Trojan War, contains only a few lines about the Queen. All of the other action occurs around her and for her, but not by her.

But that description of Helen as a woman who is acted upon rather than one who acts does not seem to mix well with the true history of the woman.  Helen was not actually Helen of Troy but Helen, queen of Sparta. In The Belial Warrior, this alternative Helen, the one who ruled a kingdom of the world’s fiercest fighters, comes to light. It’s time we learned what the enigmatic queen was really like.

The world has learned the legend of Helen of Troy, but not her story.

Even the name by which she is known is not her true title.

She was Helen, Queen of Sparta.

And she was much more than a pretty face.

Delaney McPhearson has been made a public pariah. She barely escaped with her life from Colorado when law enforcement agents moved in. And she cannot take credit for that escape. No, that credit belongs to one man, Drake-Las Vegas entertainer, sabbatical taking archangel, and consummate egoist.

But Drake’s help is not without strings. He has an agenda too. He knows for Laney to move forward, she must first delve into her past–she must remember her life as Helen of Troy.

History has never truly known Helen. For hundreds of years cults celebrated her, well before Homer immortalized her in The Iliad as a woman who turned her back on her family and kingdom for a handsome face. Yet as with many of history’s greatest characters, the life of Helen of Troy is more than it seems.

Now it’s finally time for the most maligned woman in history to tell her side of the story.

Cover Reveal: The Belial Warrior

So some readers have been kind enough to get in touch and ask when The Belial Warrior is coming out. (Others have suggested I forego sleep to finish it faster. To that end, they have kindly offered to supply me with copious amounts of coffee.) It’s getting there! It will be out somewhere toward the end of October.

But as a little tease, I thought I’d reveal the cover for it.  So here it is!

Helen of Troy – the world has learned her legend but not her story.

For the name by which she was known was not her true title. She was Helen, Queen of Sparta.

And she was much more than just a pretty face.

So enjoy the rest of September and I’ll ‘see’ you in October!

P.S. Those of you who signed up for the mailing list should have received a .PDF of B.E.G.I.N. by now. If for some reason you did not, shoot me an email ( and I’ll see what went wrong.  If you haven’t signed up for the mailing list, you can do so here.

The Chase Is On!

About a year ago, I went to go see Jurassic World. And yes, I know, a lot of people slammed the movie. But I enjoyed it. It was a straight up chase film, with the humans being the ones chased. In fact, the whole Jurassic series has been a non-stop chase scene with dinosaurs.

So I decided I wanted to write something like that.

The problem was I didn’t want it to be ‘humans chasing humans’ story. I knew I needed monsters. The question was, what type? And what would be believable in a large number? Just one monster and the chase gets repetitious. I’m over the vampire thing, couldn’t really picture a Frankenstein army, and dinosaurs have already been done. Patterson already did the ‘when animals attack’ route. So I came up with my monsters – aliens.

Yes, aliens.

I know, I know – it sounds a little out there. So to get over my own skepticism I started researching everything I could find on aliens, UFO sightings, crashes, our solar system, exoplanets, genetic engineering – the list went on and on. And the more I researched, the more the plot filled in. It’s been a crazy, fun, and at times, scary ride. But I am loving where this series is heading! I hope you’ll give it a chance. You can find it on Amazon.

Are we alone in the universe?

The United States government has known the answer for decades.

And that answer is about to escape.

Reports of unknown objects in the sky date back hundreds of years. But since the early twentieth century, the frequency of those reports has increased dramatically.

In response, the United States government has been looking for a way to combat the alien threat they see looming on the horizon. Their most promising prospect is the A.L.I.V.E. (Alien Life In Vitro Experiment) Project.

Working from Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dr. Maeve Leander has been in charge of Alvie, the first subject from the A.L.I.V.E. Project, for the last three years. But she’s been part of the project much longer—ever since she was a child and her mother ran the project.

As a new agency takes over the A.L.I.V.E. Projects, though, Maeve learns that Alvie wasn’t the only subject created. Caught in the middle of a giant war game, Maeve ends up in a race for her life. It’s not just humans, though, she’s on the run from. And it’s not just herself she’s trying to save.

But as the violence increases and the chances for survival decrease, she realizes one terrifying truth: despite its name, the real goal of the A.L.I.V.E. project is to make sure no one gets out alive.

Let It B.E.G.I.N.!

I am happy to announce that the first installment in the A.L.I.V.E. series, B.E.G.I.N., is now available on Amazon.

13173024_994219477328143_461505311628520360_oAnd for the first time, I have joined with a group of other authors in a collection of short stories entitled Clones the Anthology. Each author has put their own interpretation on the topic of clones. I of course took the facts about cloning, the United States military, and UFO sightings to create my own personal ‘what if’ story. The beauty of the anthology is that you may even find another author that you really enjoy reading and all for the bargain price of 99 cents, at least until June 7th. 🙂

B.E.G.I.N. is the first in the A.L.I.V.E. series which will be followed by R.E.S.U.M.E. and A.L.I.V.E..  Both will be available by the beginning of July. So pick up Clones the Anthology today!

13198591_10153524398142483_8311438349980151907_oIn 1988, Project B.E.G.I.N. (Biological Experiment of Genetic Interaction Nexus) was developed in response to the increasing alien presence in the United States air space. The science is years ahead of anything being done in the private sector. Lead scientist Dr. Alice Leander knows she is on the cusp of world changing technology.

But as the project succeeds, she begins to question what exactly that success means. Because if she succeeds she will bring a living being into the world. And then who does she answer to: her conscience or her government?

Read Hominid for less than a dollar!

Hominid is currently being offered for only $0.99. If you haven’t had a chance to read it, now is a great time to pick it up. This book was a true joy to write. It combines the legends and science surrounding bigfoot. And I was quite shocked when I was doing the research at just how much there was of each!

1hom1Here’s what some readers have said:

“This story had me shedding some tears, but I loved it.”

“If you want a good rich story with great characters and a fast satisfying plot this is it. I love the way all aspects of Bigfoot are handled and the bonus tidbits at the end pertaining to the authors research are awesome.”

“I absolutely loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. I think it’s spot on about human nature and what would occur if someone were to reveal the existence of bigfoot.”

“I was drawn into the lives of both the humans and the big feet, big foots? And the kicker for me? I’ve continued to think about some of the characters after finishing the book.”

Book Description:

Hominid (noun): any of the modern or extinct bipedal primates of the family of humans or apes

According to the experts, Homo sapiens are the only hominids in the family of humans that currently exists.

One scientist has a plan to prove them wrong.

For centuries, legends of a giant hairy beast roaming the Pacific Northwest have made their way into the collective understanding. Despite the reports, conclusive proof of bigfoot has never been found.

With advanced degrees in Anatomy and Physiology as well as a deep understanding of the forest, Dr. Tess Brannick has a plan to change all that. And a year into her research in northern California, she is on the precipice of a world-shattering discovery. But the closer she gets to her goal, the more concerned she becomes. Not with the subject, but with the man backing her research – Carter Hayes.

Hayes is a CEO renowned and loathed in equal parts. He has been obsessed with bigfoot since he was a child. And now he sees a chance to create a legacy that will place his name in the annals of history.

All great discoveries, though, come with a cost. And Tess knows she won’t be the only one to pay this one. But Hayes isn’t concerned with the cost. He will achieve his goal, and he won’t let anyone stand in his way.

Especially not Tess.

What’s Happening in the Publishing World of R.D. Brady

So, there’s a lot happening in the publishing world of R.D. Brady! Podcasts, audiobooks, new releases, new genres – it’s been fun.

The Belial Guard - Ebook Small

So I thought I’d give you a little preview/update.   Let’s start with the Belial Series. The next installment of the Belial Series, The Belial Guard, will be out in the middle of April. I love this book! Laney is finally ready to accept her identity and embrace who she is. Which is exactly when the world decides to pull the rug out from under her. The follow-up, The Belial Warrior, will come out in October.

Before that though, there will be two other publications. In May, I’ll be part of a short story anthology on cloning. My first foray in the world of Sci-fi! This will be followed up by A.L.I.V.E. this summer. A.L.I.V.E. is the follow-up to the short story in the anthology.

And while we’re at it, the audiobooks are coming along as well. The first two books of the Belial series are out, the third’s about to go into production and Hominid is also available on audio book.

Plus, I did my first podcast on Hank Garner’s the Author Stories Podcast. It was a great experience. You can listen to it here.

So a lot’s been happening and there’s a lot coming up. I hope you’ve enjoyed the journey so far and I’m happy to say the best is yet to come!

The 3 A.M. List

I’ve decided to create a new category of books: the 3 a.m. list. These are the books that you find yourself reading until three a.m. in the morning all the while saying I really need to put this down and get some sleep.

I have found another series to add to the list: The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. The main protagonist is a kick ass female, quite literally. She is an assassin in the fantastical realm. Here’s the blurb:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her… but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead… quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

This series is just wonderful. You will get completely lost in it. I did. So I strongly encourage you to only begin it if you have some time.

And speaking of the 3 A.M. List, the latest installment of the Girl in the Box series, Sea Change, will be coming out on February 17th. So block out some time for some reading!

Homo Sapiens: The Only Bipedal Primates on the Planet – Right?

Each time I write a book, I do my research. And more often than not, that research leads to more questions and more research for a different book. Such was the case for The Belial Children. I won’t give anything for those who have yet to read the book, but as I was conducting those particular lines of research, I kept coming across tales of giant primates in North America.

So I started researched bigfoot, sasquatch, yeti, and a dozen other names for a giant hairy primate. The more I learned the more fascinated I became and I knew there was a book in there. Originally, I had hoped to incorporate the topic into the Belial Series. But let’s be honest, Laney meeting bigfoot stretches the realm of credibility a little too far. As a result, Dr. Tess Brannick was born. An anthropologist with a background in anatomy and physiology, she is intent on proving the existence of the creature that has been the stuff of legends for centuries.

Even though Hominid is outside the Belial series, it is written in the same manner – lots of facts weaved between the narrative. In fact, Hominid has the largest fact and fiction section of all the books I’ve written.

So while you’re waiting for the next Belial series book (coming in November) I hope you’ll take a chance on Hominid. It is now available on!

P.S. And I failed to do an announcement for two other books: The Belial Origins and Runs Deep. Runs Deep is another departure from the Belial Series and honestly, was so much fun to write. Because what’s more fun than a serial killer in a small town? 🙂
